[BREAKING] CERN’s Microsoft Alternative project

Post by Patchworks »

The initial objective was to investigate the migration from commercial software products (Microsoft and others) to open-source solutions, so as to minimise CERN’s exposure to the risks of unsustainable commercial conditions. By doing so, the laboratory is playing a pioneering role among public research institutions, most of whom have recently been faced with the same dilemma.

MAlt is a multi-year effort and it will now enter a new phase with the first migrations.

The project’s principles of engagement are to:
  • Deliver the same service to every category of CERN personnel
  • Avoid vendor lock-in to decrease risk and dependency
  • Keep hands on the data
  • Address the common use-cases

All this happened because Microsoft pulled the academic licensing. They now require full Enterprise price.

This is indeed a not very clever move from MS...

This is very good from ReactOS point of view.

How so? Why do you think that?

More Windows installations to be replaced by ReactOS.

Yeah, it would only be good if we can reasonably offer them a platform within a reasonable time. Otherwise, they'd be Linux-only before we are ready to be of use.

API-compatible full microkernel route might save the rush.

Problem: We are alpha state and thus they will not consider us
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

If my post/reply offends or insults you, be sure that you know what sarcasm is...

CERN has a fleet of programmers, that can also contribute to ReactOS.

Are they aware of ReactOS?
If not someone should advice them...

For example, ProtonMail is a private encrypted email service from CERN help, it could be so useful to have their help to ReactOS development.

It would have been good if they'd contributed to ReactOS's development. Though I doubt they would use it though due to the system not working 100% yet on real hardware only a limited amount.

Any contact form, email, twitter, or something?
At least these programmers should know about ReactOS, even if they won´t or can´t help. As I see, there is nothing to loose trying to contact them.

Making ReactOS a CERN project may also cause this project to receive more funding.

Does @HeisSpiter still have connections to CERN?
