A sad day for open source developpers

Post by Yann64 »

European Union deputees have voted the law legalizing software patents.
Anybody knows what the consequences are for Open Source in general, Reactos in particular?

it seems to be really bad, but i don't know what exactly is not allowed to copy any more and what we can do now. but i heard that there are some patents on components of ms windows, too.

An English link:

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/0,39020330,39190497,00.htm

This is not finished yet. The text has to go back to the EP. If there is more than 66% vote against, it should restart.

I hope

This has been on Slashdot a bunch - it isn't quite law yet but it seems like it would take a small miracle to keep it from becoming law.

It seems like this could really hurt ReactOS, at least in the long run. Aren't most of the ReactOS developers in Europe?

Living in the US where big companies can and do patent anything, I can see that this kills independent innovation.

If anyone wants to help ReactOS and lives in Europe, try to raise awareness of this and write your officials!

Depends on if you just want "Out", or have ulterior motives.

lol i guess you speak from your own experience. Well....if you don't have any education at all, that doesn't surprise me, except that you'd get jobs here. My experience is that it's pretty hard to find jobs in the EU because experience doesn't matter, it's all about good grades in school decades ago. Companies hesitate to hire people at all because of the f..... socialist laws here. Nvm, just wanted to let you know my opinion :P

as long as i see, there is no bad day for anyone.

as the german article says, there will be no software patents for software

but there will be software patents in combination with userend thigns, like calculators, mobile phones, whatever.

maybe it affects xbox.
