Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
Interestingly, 2012 beats every other year when it comes to the sheer amount of donations. It pretty much shows that the best incentive is to see something being done, no matter what it is.
Total donations (From the website):
2008 - 81
2009 - 142
2010 - 94
2011 - 121
2012 - 498 (so far)

Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
I understand that very well. The point of my inquiry, though, was an offer for help, if possible. Could it be managed to get access to the part of the account statement with regard to donations (would be easiest if it were a dedicated account) and editing rights to the web site? I am pretty sure it would be possible to find a dedicated trustworthy soul (I'd volunteer) who could do daily updates. I doubt that it could be *that* many entries to be done on a daily basis. If am I wrong, it would be no reason to complain, either *lol*Z98 wrote:The rate of updates on donations is dependent on the availability of the accountant for the German based foundation. It is not something that can be automated easily, if at all.

Interesting output, that looks nice What are the results concerning the actual amount donated per year?Pesho wrote:Interestingly, 2012 beats every other year when it comes to the sheer amount of donations. Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
And how does the amount per donation compare? Nonetheless, good find, Pesho!
Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
Pesho's number for 2008 is incorrect because the donation page currently cuts off all donations before April 20, 2008, whereas it used to have all donations going back to 2007. There were, in fact, 126 donations in 2008. I am updating the chart that I most recently updated here. Dollars and euros are being treated as equal for simplicity's sake.
The average is skewed by a single donation of 3000 euros, without which the average would be $20.31, down 32% from last year.
Most of the donations are small. There have been 26 donations of 1 dollar/euro, 94 of 5 dollars/euros, and 119 of 10 dollars/euros.
10 dollars/euros was both the median (middle donation) and the mode (most common donation).
Note that the 13,094.60 differs from the 10,574 on the fundraising bar for two key reasons: currency conversion and expenses. PayPal, for instance, takes 2.9% of each donation plus 30 cents. I don't know if they also take 0.30 euros but, so far this year, PayPal would have kept $529.95 of the donations if all donations had been in dollars. 33 cents was charged for each of the $1 donations (33%!!!), so small donations are much more costly than large donations. Only $87.30 is taken from a donation of $3000 (which was actually in euros, but you get the point), which is only 2.91%.

Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
Nice, but did you account for the difference between EUR/USD? I decided to keep them separate for each year, for example 2010 gets 987.02EUR / 931.98USD - if you count up all the numbers directly you're not going to get the accurate amount.
Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
It won't be accurate, but what conversion rate do you suggest we use for dollars to euros? Currencies fluctuate, but people tend to make donations of 1, 5, 10 or 20 of whatever currency they donate in, so this gives a more accurate picture of what people are "really" donating than if I reduced all of the dollar donations by x% or increased all of the euro donations by x%. Listing dollars and euros separately just makes my table harder to read.

Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
Um, i'd rather just keep them separate because of the conversion issues - at least it's more accurate. Here is what i got:
2009 - 1564.9EUR / 1104.27USD
2010 - 987.02EUR / 931.98USD
2011 - 2564.47EUR / 1050.54USD
2012 - 8842.42EUR / 4252.18USD
I have not included anything before 2009 because of the cutoff you mentioned.

Not all donations pay the "PayPal tax", definitely not mine. I always use direct bank transfer which I suggest for *everyone* within the EU. It is free of charge. One of the few things which the EU is actually good for. Prior to EU regulations the banks charged horrendous amounts.
Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
Not true, my country (Bulgaria) is a member of the EU, but i am not allowed to use a local bank account. Same goes for Romania.chrisv5 wrote:Not all donations pay the "PayPal tax", definitely not mine. I always use direct bank transfer which I suggest for *everyone* within the EU. It is free of charge. Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
I think that in Czechia banks charge €4-8 for transfer to bank in other country than Czechia (my bank actually says something like "improved price when sending money within EU" ), you also don't know how fair currency conversion rate will be used. But I can at least use it to top up Paypal account for free.chrisv5 wrote:I always use direct bank transfer which I suggest for *everyone* within the EU. It is free of charge.
Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
Well, I should have added that this applies to transfers in Euros, of course. Here are the details:
http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/sh ... dex_en.htm
Let me quote the two essential parts:
"For international payments in euros within the EU, banks should charge you no more than they would for a national transaction of the same value in euros."
"Banks in EU countries which do not use the euro must also charge the same fees for transactions in the EU as they would for a domestic transfer, if the payment or transfer is made in euros."
Of course, I would not be surprised if banks violate laws. Would you?

Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
Yeah, I wouldn't be. I talked about Euro payments from the start
Re: Contract Awarded to Mike Nordell
I beg to differ.
Banks respect laws generally, it is not as if they would have much choice, really. If a bank is caught "cheating" somehow, then the financial services authority for that country is going to invite its representatives to "a nice little conversation" that will most definitely change that bank's mind. In particular, you nowadays have a rather powerful ESMA that will not let everybody do whatever he wants.
As to the charges, are you CERTAIN they come from the TARGET of the transfer and not from the MEANS of transfer? The "same" charge applies IF YOU USE AN IBAN & BIC-combination. If you do not, then you may have to pay more as the internal synchronisation within the EU is actually based on IBAN _AND_ BIC. Some banks also require a "manual operations"-charge, if you make a transfer e.g. at a counter instead of over the internet.
Ask your bank about an explanation, preferrably in written form. If the explanation is unsatisfactory or not at all received, go tell your financial services authority; they won't find that particularly funny from the bank's side.
