Win32k
Hi everyone,
We need your help with these two requests:
#1 Arwinss New Name:
As you've seen from the latest arwinss post, we need a new name that's more English friendly and pleasant to be heard/seen.
#2 Arwinss Logo:
Those with design skills could you please make a logo?
That could be used as a wallpaper, bootscreen (few colors here), and somewhere on the menues/backgrounds.
You have time until April 24th 2011.
Please post here your proposals (New Name / Logo), we'll choose the top 5, then we'll make a poll to choose the best.

Brandy/Cognac
As an alcoholic beverage, it's basically distilled Wine. As ARWINSS is essentially "purified" (AKA more NTish) WINE, I believe that this is a very good term to use.
Logo-wise, why not use an artistically styled "snifter" glass surrounded by "electrons" ala the ReactOS logo

SparklingWine, Sekt or Champagne
basicly it's the same, important point is, it's fermentated twice, wine is only once, so it's kind of superior to it :)

Re: Arwinss : Alternative names + logo request
Champagne seems appropriate if you think about how the win32 implementation was derived. Running with that idea, for the logo you could have a champagne glass, bubbly champagne inside (would represent ReactOS - the bubbles would seem like a reaction, hence ReactOS), maybe tilt it in the other direction to the wine logo as a nod of acknowledgement to them.DangerGround wrote:SparklingWine, Sekt or Champagne

And also champagne is more sophisticated beverage than wine anyway.

Re: Arwinss : Alternative names + logo request
Probably counts as a double post, but I feel WinePort sounds a lot less clumsy than abragin's proposal of PortWine. Perhaps consult with the Wine guys regarding this, since it involves their libraries and they may have some ideas, or more importantly, reservations about the use of their name on a derivative project?
Re: Arwinss : Alternative names + logo request
I think it is on purpose, since in English Porto wine is just "Port wine" (w/o the "o").Lone_Rifle wrote:Probably counts as a double post, but I feel WinePort sounds a lot less clumsy than abragin's proposal of PortWine.
Also, I think that sweet, fortified wines, like Porto, are quite popular in Russia. So my guess is that fireball thought quite a bit about this one.
Re: Arwinss : Alternative names + logo request
Why would there be any problems with that? Both projects are GPL and Arwinss code is available. Although we could use their ideas and manpower.Lone_Rifle wrote:Perhaps consult with the Wine guys regarding this, since it involves their libraries and they may have some ideas,
Indeed this might be tricky, and while it sound ridiculous to be able to copyright a generic word, a certain software company was successful in enforcing it on their brand of transparent openings in walls.Lone_Rifle wrote:more importantly, reservations about the use of their name on a derivative project?
Oh, while we are on it: PortOSwine (to better reflect that it is not merely a port, but a full and stand-alone system).
Re: Arwinss : Alternative names + logo request
How about WinePortOS then?Lone_Rifle wrote:As a native English speaker, PortWine sounds a little cumbersome compared to WinePort.
The problem I see with this one is that it "sounds" like it originated from Wine project.
Re: Arwinss : Alternative names + logo request
What about the abuse of this name, PortO Swine!Oh, while we are on it: PortOSwine
The enemies will have a field day!

The trade mark property doesn't has no relation to the GPL license.fred02

Re: Arwinss : Alternative names + logo request
The word "wine" can't be trademarked because it's a generic word.
I thought about calling the branch WineOS (and Ged proposed this name in #reactos-dev a few days ago) when I was about to commit it, but "WineOS" implies something different, and as OS is usually percepted by its kernel, WineOS would mean some kind of a Linux+Wine monster.
